Will Prohibitionists Associate Fresh Conservative Movement With Trump?

Legalized cannabis.

The Donald Trump administration took stances that essentially opposed the relaxing of marijuana laws. That cost Trump the 2020 Presidential Election, according to many people’s opinion. Anyhow, those people think about the same things regarding the American Conservative movement in the future. A healthy position is always essential for the US, so it has to be a matter of interest for every person, regardless of their politics.

It would appear that American Drug Warriors have already captured leading Conservative policy institutes. Kay Coles James heads The Heritage Foundation, which is among the oldest existing Conservative institutes. For the uninitiated, James served under former President George Herbert Walker Bush as the Associate Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

However, James’ institute has not been telling the truth regarding marijuana. The former boss of James, namely John Walters heads the Hudson Institute, which is among the main rivals of Heritage. For your information, Walters was the so-called ‘Drug Czar’ during Bush’s presidential term, and among the worst in that position.

Walters once described marijuana as the biggest factor in the US’s illegal drug dependence issue. As for Walters, there was a traditional view of marijuana as a harmless and non-addictive drug without any withdrawal symptoms.

Another leading conservative policy institute, the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research, is much more moderate as it mainly relies on psychiatrist Sally Satel. Many describe Satel as someone who moderately favors marijuana’s prohibition. That said, those many people also recognize the fact that Satel is honest, in contrast to her counterparts. Nevertheless, AEI does not know how everyone in the United States of America feels about the marijuana prohibition matter.

In the actual world of politics, those policy institutes exist to provide cover to American politicians. It is unfortunate that only some politicians are interested in ideas. For the ones keen on those, the leading Libertarian policy institute of Washington namely the Cato Institute as well as California’s Reason Foundation are very good. Tucker Carlson of Fox News also cares about ideas. Carlson is not an unrealistic or impractical person on the fringe about marijuana.

The present issue for American Conservatism is that it is important to calibrate everything around Donald Trump. For your information, Trump’s earlier libertarian opinion about marijuana disappeared as he believed that a prohibitionist AG would become his consigliere. That prohibitionist AG (attorney general) was Jeff Sessions first and then William Barr.

In the coming few years, there will be a need for American Conservatism to define itself again or differently. In the event of Conservatism connecting itself to marijuana’s prohibition, it would not get the majority again. At least, that is what experts in American politics feel.
